I. READING
Task 1. Read the text and choose the correct answer A, B, C or D:
LYING DOGGO

Leading a dog's life can’t be much fun and would be easy to say that Oscar does just that. Easy, but untrue because, frankly. Oscar and other less gifted working dogs have very little in common. Oscar is not, however, interested in the worthwhile pursuit of becoming a guide dog for the blind, or even the dangers of being a security dog fighting crime. For the past three years, Oscar has enjoyed the sort of privileged show business lifestyle that is probably only experienced by the most successful stars of the entertainment world.

Certainly, not every dog can boast about having his own chauffeur to drive him around and not every dog has a man working on his behalf to organize a highly commercial nationwide tour. This is no ordinary dog. This is Oscar the Hypnodog!

At first glance, backstage, there was nothing unusual about him as he wandered into the dressing room, waiting for his big moment. It took an observant theatre employee to notice the dog’s secret, saying, as he patted Oscar affectionately, ‘Good boy, good boy. Haven’t you got big eyes?’

Oscar’s owner, entertainer Hugh Lennon, smiled, for Oscar’s best feature is, indeed, his big, black, deep eyes. Hugh remembers buying Oscar as a puppy some years ago for that very reason. Hypnotism was then very popular and Hugh, who performed magic and hypnotism, was looking for a big finish to his show. ‘I realized that, although he was a friendly dog, he had this really dominant stare - and that I could teach him to do what I do - hypnotize people!’

I watched him in action towards the end of the show when he scrambled onto the stage. He sat at Hugh’s feet, staring up at his master just like any dog would on stage in front of a large audience. Hugh invited members of the audience to stroll up to the stage and kneel down by the dog. An intelligent human being was on the point of being put into a trance, by a dog! Suddenly, Oscar swung his head around and gave a youth a long stare. The young man’s eyes started rolling towards the roof, and the eyelids were closing as he fell to the floor.

Hugh managed to catch him as he fell. Five other people did the same, flopping gently on the person already lying below them.

The audience was hysterical with laughter and could hardly believe what they were seeing. Within seconds, Oscar was creeping towards the side of the stage and, centre stage, Hugh was bringing round Oscar’s victims.

Half an hour later, the theatre was dark again, and Oscar, Hugh and the rest of the crew were heading for the nearest hotel. The dog looked at me, and, I confess, I tried to avoid eye contact. Just to be safe!
