I. READING
Read the texts and choose the right answer
The Neverending Story

An excellent story, one that can be read again and again.

REVIEWER:

It is unfortunate that a movie was made out of this book, because it really takes something away from it! This is a wonderful, original story – a boy named Bastian steals a book called The Neverending Story from a bookshop and hides himself in the schoolhouse attic to read it. The book he has stolen is about the magical world of Fantastica, a world that is interconnected with its ruler (The Childlike Empress); but she is dying, and Fantastica is dying with her. As he reads on, Bastian gets slowly more and more drawn into the book, until the two worlds begin to overlap…

The style of the book is clever and elegant. It is easy to distinguish the parts set in Fantastica from the parts set in the schoolhouse, for the parts in the schoolhouse are written in italics. The ideas are original (I love the idea of the “nothing” that engulfs Fantastica – you can’t even see it properly because there is nothing to see) and nothing else I have ever read rivals it for ingenuity. Though the book is not particularly long, so much happens in it that by the time you reach the end you feel as if you have been reading it for years. The broad outline of the plot that I gave only covers the first part of the book. I can’t write any more because I don’t want to spoil it. The book’s also humorous and gives the reader a few things to think about, though no in an obvious way – the morals are there to be picked up if you happen to notice them. This is an absolute classic, and I would unhesitatingly recommend it to anybody who loves a really good fantasy novel.

Alexis had only one clue to her mother’s past: a faded wedding picture which had stood on Sophia’s bedside table for as long as Alexis could remember, the ornate silver frame worn thin with polishing. In early childhood when Alexis used her parent’s big, bumpy bed as a trampoline, the image of the smiling but rather stiffly posed couple in the picture had floated up and down in front of her. Sometimes she asked her mother questions about the beautiful lady in lace and the chiselled platinum-haired man. What were their names? Why did he have grey hair? Where were they now? Sofia had given the briefest of answers; that they were Aunt Maria and Uncle Nikolaos, and they had lived in Crete and that they were both now dead. This information had satisfied Alexis then – but now she needed to know more. It was the status of this picture – the only framed photograph in the entire house that intrigued her as much as anything. The couple had clearly been significant in her mother’s childhood and yet Sophia always seemed reluctant to talk about them. It was much more than reluctance; in fact it was stubborn refusal. As Alexis grew into adolescence she had learned to respect her mother’s desire for privacy – it was as keen as her own teenage instinct to lock herself away and avoid communication. But she had grown beyond all that now.

3. Why did Alexis find the wedding photograph in her mother’s bedroom so interesting?
A. It reminded her of her childhood
B. It was clearly a most treasured object Это правильный ответ
C. She didn’t believe what her mother said about it
D. She remembered feeling frustrated by her mother’s attitude

More than words can say

Hollywood has always mined comic books for ready-made characters with instant audience recognition. Some of the resultant films were good – think of Superman and the spiritual darkness of Batman – most less so. Some directors are mining graphic novels to better effect. Quentin Tarantino used anime, the two-dimensional animation style derived from Japanese manga comic books, for scenes in his film Kill Bill. Back on the printed page, however, the graphic novel form is evolving. Authors and artists now use the literary form as witness to recent events, for polemics, for coming-of-age stories and for tender tales of family life.

Graphic novels often demand three readings: once for the text, once for the drawings and once to bring the two together. Authors play with the possibilities, using the graphics to tell a different tale to the text. In Jimmy Corrigan: the Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware, an estranged father and son are pictured in a dinner scene reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s painting Nighthawks. It is only later, when they realize that they have had their car stolen, that the reader turns back to see the thief clearly outlined by the light from the dinner window. Ware varies his frame sizes too, adjusting the emphasis of each and, on some pages, creating a collage of images that illuminate the story. Other authors use whole pages to create the dramatic impact of a film close-up.

5. In the first paragraph, the writer is suggesting that
A. films based on comic book characters were generally unsuccessful Это правильный ответ
B. film adaptation are influencing the development of graphic novels
C. films are harder to adapt from graphic novels than from comic books
D. films based on graphic novels rather than comic books are more realistic

Happy To Be Average

At a dinner party I was at recently, conversation was reaching fever pitch. A group of very boring parents were (1) … about just how exceptional their children were. “Little Rosie was walking almost before she was born,” said one. “That’s nothing! Little Bobby was using conditional tenses at thirteen months and was even (2) …. his mother,” said another.
Then came the (3) …. of a woman who had, until then, chosen to (4) …. silent. What contributions was her child bringing into the world? The table hushed as she spoke. “Well, Theo’s entirely average,” she said. “But I love him.”
How brave she was to value the average, thereby elevating it to the extraordinary. The ironic thing, (5) …. , was that the rest of the dinner guests then started to compete all over again, saying that actually their child was considerably more average than hers because, etc., etc. It made me (6) …. that being confident enough to say you are entirely average means that you’re actually anything but.
The world is full of superlatives. We have become (7) …. to everything being new, brilliant, fabulous, the latest or the best ever. So much so that we too end up talking like the advertisers who are always telling us that things are glamorous, fairy-tale, glittering and wonderful. I’m sure that I’m not (8) …. in feeling very tired of it all.

1 Moreover, for many people graffiti is often associated with crime and violence.
2 Art has lots of different forms. However, its evaluation is especially problematic today when controversial art forms such as graffiti have become rather popular. Although the artistic value of graffiti is still highly contested, I regard it as a new form of art.
3 There are still some people who oppose as, graffiti is often seen as vandalism because instead of canvas graffiti artists choose train cars or public walls.
4 I also disagree because I believe city authorities should create special places for graffiti can be very artistic, colourful and can brighten up an area.
5 In my opinion, works produced by graffiti artists demonstrate a range of personal and cultural expression as it is the way for people to express their feeling and emotions.
6 What is more, in many ways viewing graffiti is very much like viewing contemporary art in a gallery and it is appreciated by many people.
7 In conclusion, I would argue that graffiti is definitely a form of art worthy of display in public places, although I agree that artists should get permission from those whose property will be used as canvas.
8 Actually, these opinions are unfair as most graffiti artists do not belong to any rebellious subculture. I am convinced that people paint on public things because they have nowhere else to express their feeling.
9 In addition, graffiti like any other art work takes vision and planning as well as a lot of effort.
