Task 1
Read the text and mark the sentences T (True) or F (False) .

Easter Island lies in the South Pacific. About 1600 people live there. All of them live in Hanga Roa – the island’s only town and capital. Chile governs the island, although it is about 3700 kilometres away.
A Dutch admiral called Jacob Roggeveen discovered the island on Easter Sunday 1722. That’s how it got its name. There are nearly 300 giant stone heads on Easter Island. Some of these are 9.75 metres tall and some weigh up to 80 tonnes. In about AD 1000 the Easter Islanders started making the statues. They used hard rock that came from the inactive volcano on the island – Rano Raraku. Then they moved the huge heads to their present positions – mostly near the sea.
Afterwards there were civil wars. In the fighting different warring groups of islanders pushed many of the statues to the ground. At the moment archaeologists are working on Easter Island. They are lifting some of the fallen statues and moving them back to their original positions. But some statues are so heavy that even modern machines find the job difficult. How did the Easter Islanders of AD 1000 move these huge heads with the primitive tools they had? Nobody knows for sure.
