| Read the text and decide if the statements below the text are true or false. Are you looking for a great day out? Why not visit Stonehenge, and discover its amazing history? Stonehenge is one of Britain’s most mysterious places. It is an ancient stone circle. The monument was built in about 2,300 BC. Archaeologists think Stonehenge was a type of ancient calendar because the sun falls on different stones at different times of the year. No one lived in the stone circle, but priests probably had special ceremonies there. Come and see the biggest calendar on Earth! We still don’t know how the monument was built. The biggest stones weigh up to forty five tons, and they came from somewhere hundreds of miles away! So how did people move these massive stones? One legend says that giants moved them, but that’s just a story, of course! We’ll probably never know how Stonehenge was built. Help us to protect our history! The stone circle has been a popular tourist attraction for hundreds of years. The monument is now protected by a fence because visitors had been damaging the stones. Come and experience the beauty of Stonehenge for yourself, but please take care when you visit the site. Stonehenge is near Salisbury, in England. You can reach it easily from London. |
